Developmental Care CNE Module 1
Developmental Care State of the Science - 1.5 CNE contact hours
Module Summary
Although developmental care has been in existence for decades, research to support many aspects of this type of care continues to evolve. More work is needed to either support or refute developmental care recommendations for extremely-low-birth-weight through full-term sick infants.

Developmental Care CNE Module 2
Theoretical Perspective for Developmentally Supportive Care - 1.5 CNE contact hours
Module Summary
An appreciation of the evolution and neurobiological social context of developing human newborns provides an understanding of observable behavior. When professional caregivers understand the newborn infant's behavior, it informs and guides all human interaction within the newborn intensive care unit (NICU). The Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP®; South Attlesboro, MA) has been implemented and explored for the past 25 years and has been shown to support the preterm infant's emerging development.

Developmental Care CNE Module 3
Quality Indicators: Using the Universe of Developmental Care - 1.5 CNE contact hours
Module Summary
Developmental care is practiced around the world, yet a concise definition has yet to be universally accepted. Until the practice is standardized, comparisons between and within units will remain fraught with difficulty. The Universe of Developmental Care (UDC) Model is the first reformulation of the conceptual foundation of developmental care since Synactive Theory. The UDC places the individual patient at the center (core) of care. Evidence-based outcomes relating to the external environment and new therapies arising from internal medicine are incorporated in the UDC as primary care practices grounded on the common surface shared by body and environment. Core measures are quantifiable care practices that manifest at a defined surface of care that can be either disease-dependent or disease-independent. Core measures are measures of care based on evidence. The UDC model postulates that infants, families, staff, and the environment share a common surface that must be attended to for all aspects of physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. Specific examples of disease-independent core measures of developmental care are detailed in this chapter. The concept of core measures further refines the tenets of developmental care and offers practical approaches to practice, education, and research. Additionally, the chapter offers a methodology to introduce and evaluate change within the NICU. Foundationally, the UDC model and its definition of core measures manifest a philosophy of change in healthcare based on evidence of improved outcomes for infants and families worldwide.

Developmental Care CNE Module 4
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Environmen - 1 CNE contact hour
Module Summary
The NICU environment has a tremendous impact on developing neonates. Recommendations for NICU design and research studies have addressed the relationship between environmental elements and potential outcomes for neonates and families. The environment and other factors external to neonates and families are part of developmental care; one cannot be considered without the other. Emerging research suggests the NICU environment must be as protective to the neonate as the womb is to the fetus. The NICU must nurture and promote positive growth.
